Ben's Gotcha Day!
Three years ago today, the court in Volgograd, Russia officially declared Benjamin to be our son. I will never forget June 23, 2006. I will also never forget having to wait until June 26 to go get him. Court was on a Friday, and the orphanage was too far away to pick Benjamin up that day, so we had to wait until first thing Monday morning. These pictures are actually from June 22, 2006. We were able to visit Benjamin once before the court date and enjoyed some time with him. I look at these pictures and am just shocked by how small he is. He looks so tine. The overall shorts they had on him were too small, but they did fit. They were a size 6 months. We put him in 18 mos clothes and they were baggy. Today he is happy and enjoying life. He may still be small, but I have to remind myself he has grown a great deal. We received some news from the pediatric GI today. Ben has a bacteria in his stomach called H Pylori. He'll be taking some serious antibiotics over the next few weeks to kill it off. About 2 years ago, I started asking the doctors if he could have H Pylori. I had heard about the bacteria from other adoption mamas and wondered if that could be causing some of Ben's growth issues. It is very rare here in the US, so for the most part I was politely dismissed and I let it go. Now I wish I had listened to my mama instincts and pushed to have him tested sooner. We are pretty sure he has had this since living in Russia, as it is very rare in the US. But in places like Russia, without treated water, it is fairly common. We are hoping treating this will help him feel better and help his system to work better.

Can you share more about why you thought Benjamin had H Pylori? This is the first time I've ever heard of it and I think any basic info. you could share might benefit any of us adoptive parents who might have children with it.

Thanks,

I am so very pleased that you have finally got some answers to your many questions about Ben's eating habits and his lack of growth. However, seeing him last week for the first time in such a very long time, probably close to a year, he has gotten taller but I don't think he could get any cuter....he is such a charmer.
I do remember very vividly the trials and tribulations you and Brian went through getting this little boy.....it was certainly well worth the wait and just look at your beautiful, amazing family now. I love the picture of the 3 kids sitting on PaPa's lap, the look on the faces of the girls, especially Libby's when Ben was acting up.......it is priceless and I would have loved to hear her thoughts at that very moment.
You are a very blessed couple and these 3 beautiful children are blessed even more......CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
My love to all....

Jacob had a HORRIBLE case of H. Pylori and had to be treated 3 times and had 6 scopes done before they totally got rid of it. Make sure you give Ben a probiotic with those antibiotics because they are pretty rough on the intestines. Also, it might be wise for you and your husband to be tested....our pediatric GI doctor tested both of us and our other son (who also had it but not a bad case). Feel free to email me privately if you have more questions.

So glad he is getting treated! I too suspected something was wrong, but didn't act right away because the symptoms were really hard to pinpoint. We were going after giardia for the longest time and he always tested negative. I felt awful when our son was first diagnosed, but now that I see how well he is doing post treatment, I am just grateful we caught it at all.
