Libby came out of surgery around 1:00. Lori was her PACU nurse and she was great. It was so nice to have my friend right there. Libby was already awake when they brought me in. She had come out of OR awake and was in pain. It was gut wrenching to see her screaming in pain and pointing at her leg. They quickly gave her some morphine to control the pain. Once she had calmed down, they made room for a rocking chair and moved Libby into my arms. She fell asleep on my shoulder for awhile thanks to the morphine. When it wore off, and she woke up, so was very clear that her leg hurt. I was so proud of her use of words. She was upset, but she very clearly said "leg, owie, hurt". They then increased the medicine going through her epidural. Oh, let me explain that part...
Libby was put under with a gas mask. Once under anesthesia she was given an IV and an epidural. They are using the epidural to block nerve pain to her leg. This allows them to control the pain of the leg without having to give a bunch of all-over pain medicine.
Libby seemed comfortable and relaxed in my arms until about 4:00 when we were moved to a room.
